PWOJE ESPWA SUD - Les Cayes, Haiti
Dates: Starting Summer 2010
Please join us as we lay the next two foundations for four new homes for the orphaned children of Pwoje Espwa Sud who are under the care of Father Marc Boisvert. We'll also be constructing the new septic system and water storage tanks with assistance from the older Espwa youths and local community.
The orphanage is located in the village of Torbeck, which is about fifteen minutes from the city of Les Cayes. In this village of hope: over 680 children are receiving shelter and care, over 1,200 children are provided with academic and vocational educations and 3,000 meals are prepared and served daily. As a result of the January 12th earthquake there are more than 750 children now being cared for; the need for safe, decent housing is dire.
Haiti is located on an island shared with the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean. In 2008 Haiti was ravished by four consecutive hurricanes and now the January 12th, 2010 earthquake has claimed the lives of more than 220,000 people, destroying more than 105,000 homes and damaging over 208,000, 1,300 educational institutions and more than 50 hospitals. These disasters have contaminated clean water and compromised many food sources. Additionally, the AIDs epidemic continues to claim the lives of thousands of mothers and fathers each year leaving their children exposed and vulnerable. In fact 1 out of 8 children die before the age of five, 44% of those that survive will be illiterate, 70% will be unemployed and most will live the poverty line.
Father Marc is their refuge, maybe their oasis of hope and we can help the orphans in his care by providing them with a decent, highly hurricane and earthquake resistant homes. Therefore, REACH has partnered with STUCC ON STEEL and SHELTER2HOME to provide the viable building system that will be constructed with volunteers and the local community.
